Not so matchy matchy anymore!

If there is one thing that I would NEVER do again is buy a matching bedroom set!! I would buy maybe two pieces of the set and the rest would be odd pieces that were collected over time. I don't think we'll be buying a new bedroom set, so I decided to make a few small changes to get away from it looking so matchy matchy. I replaced my nightstand with this skirted table from Ballards.
Being our bed is so high I order the table 30 inches high so it would be level with the bed. You know I love my check fabric so I went with the toffee ck table skirt. Ordered a new pillow for the chair too:)

I'm really lovin this look!

Another change I made a few years ago was changing the mirror that came with my dresser to this one.

I like your bedroom changes! Your checkered tablecloth looks nice and the pillows add a special touch to the room!

Looking Great! My dh would kill me if I changed up any bedroom furniture.
We had it custom made 30 years or so ago.

Your bedroom is absolutely beautiful Martina! I did the same thing in ours with 2 different nightstands and one being a skirted table and I think it really does lighten and soften. You have so many lovely details here! :-)

HI Martina! Your bedroom is so beautiful! Well, I'm guilty of the matchy matchy in my bedroom! ;)

I will not buy a matching set ever again either. Back in the day I think everyone did and now the thing is for it not to match. Love your updates.

I love this Martina. I won't be buying matched bedroom furniture either. I love the collected look.

Loving your gorgeous bedroom, and the new table looks awesome in here. I too am done with the matchy, matchy. (But I admit that I have matching nightstands.)

Love your bedroom. I agree I don't do matchy matchy either. I love that birdcage!

Your bedroom looks lovely, Martina. I think your set is beautiful & you've managed to soften the look of all the wood with the skirted table. Besides, just wait a few years & the trends will have come full-circle & matched sets will be "the thing!"

I love your changes! I'm such a fan of skirted tables. I think they soften a room and they are usually less expensive than case goods. Do you know why people tend to buy matching furniture sets in the first place? Furniture stores were told to try to sell the full set as a way to make more money! Designers usually never buy full matching sets though. They know better. Ha! I find a room is much more interesting with disparate pieces that blend rather than match perfectly. I know you will be happy with your changes too.

Marty,
I think you have the perfect space:) I agree pieces gathered over time that don't match make it feel homey. Beautiful bedroom.

I love me some check too Martina. The new look of your bedroom is beautiful. Great job!

Very pretty Martina...I have always loved the tables with the tablecloths on them....yours is very nice. Change is fun once in a while!!

Pretty, Martina! I love skirted tables. I have two in my living room and used the Ballard's burlap tablecloths on them. I love the texture they add to the room. The check one you got looks like the check chair slip I got for my sewing chair {from Ballard}.

Debbiedoos said...

So pretty Martina. That table is perfect. I never have had two matching end tables in our bedroom. I did however have them in our first apartment aside the couches, and then two exact table lamps to boot. Looking back I laugh now.

Great changes. Isn't it funny how we all thought it was the right thing to do to buy an entire bedroom set? I remember we looked for months because we would find a set but not like one of the pieces. I love my bedroom set, but I love the idea of breaking it up too.

Gina said...

I am literally LOL at this post. Not because I think your bedroom is funny...not at all...it's beautiful and I love the changes you made.
I'm laughing because I just told my husband yesterday that I hate having a matchy matchy bedroom set and that I think we should remove the mirror from the long dresser. Ha! Have you been in my head or have I been in yours?
Love your new tablecover. I love checks!

Martina, I had to laugh..haven't we all bought a whole set of bedroom furniture sometime in our lives? I think the last one I had was Mediterranean style..from back in the '70s. Your bedroom looks sooo good. Love the round skirted table with the toffee checkm and the monogrammed pillow.

Soothing room, same colors as mine and come to think of it I'm relaxed when I finally get to crawl into my bed so my room must be soothing too!

Your bedroom is lovely Martina!
We sold our bedroom suite a few months back it was so similar to yours. It pained me to sell it having been a very expensive wedding gift from my mom. It was so large and high the bed. The woman's dresser was massive and impossible to move. So we made the big purge.
Anyways my next purchase will not be matchy match either. Funny how are taste changes over the years!

Looks outstanding! I too did away with the matching furniture a few years ago and really like mixing it up.

Martina, I am so guilty of the matchy, matchies in our bedroom! We have had our SET for over 30 years and I still love it but LOVE the look of different bedside tables. Maybe since we are moving I will try to MIX IT UP a little:):) Thanks for the inspiration, your room is gorgeous! XO, Pinky

Hi, Martina! Your bedding is so pretty. I love the simply white coverlet/spread. I agree, I'll NEVER buy a matching bed set. My bed is very similar to yours and we have a 30" skirted table by it as well. Great minds think alike!:)

Everything is so pretty, love your room. I remember back in the day I would be so sad becuase we couldn't afford to buy the whole matching set, now I am so thankful we didn't :) Funny.

i don't think your room looks too "matchy matchy" at all!! I love the mix of fabrics and the check table cloth just adds to the room's texture! Looks great!!

Martina, you know I love your master bedroom retreat! You've done a fabulous job of making it not so matchy-matchy! I love the checked fabric ... love it all!

Shirley@Housepitality Designs said...

Martina...I can fully relate to you!!....I have a "matchy-matchy" set...Now every piece did not come from the same manufacturer, but they are all cherry...I have not had the heart to replace the "matchy mirror" so I placed a large bird cage in front of it to disguise it!!...It seems to work!!....Love what you did...your bedroom is beautiful!

I did a post about my bedroom last week and it made me think about when we had a complete bedroom suite. Now, the only thing left is the long dresser. And, I want to paint that this summer. I was so excited when we bought it and everything matched. Oh, how our tastes do change.

The bedroom changes look great. I too have a matched bedroom set, and the hubs will not let me change a thing!
