An unexpected visitor

Look at the size of this woodpecker! My husband was sitting at the counter earlier today and all I hear is OH "bleep" GET THE CAMERA!! The hubby was joking around and said this woodpecker looks like he's on steroids, he's so big! We have two woodpeckers that come to our feeders everyday but they are 1/2 the size of this guy.
 Look at that pretty face...
...and look at the size of that beak! I'm guessing he could do some damage!

Have you ever seen a woodpecker this big? We sure haven't!
There he is getting ready for take off!
Have a great weekend!

  9. We have bigger ones than that, but ours is a different species, too. The one I have been watching lately is trying to destroy our chimney. Yep, it is big.

  10. He is cute! But I am thinking a wood pecker on steroids is probably not a good thing:) Great pictures.

  12. His older brother lives here and hammerjacks the fireplace flue at 6:00 am every morn. We live in a woods, he could find a tree. Nothing says time to get up more than the echo of beak to metal through out a home.

  27. Hi there,
He is beautiful, but yes he can do extreme damage... He is a Piliated woodpecker, and if hungry enough, he will strip bark off trees thereby giving them an eventual death sentence. Don't encourage him to stay around, he is bad news in a beautiful boa :^)
